In line with the principles of the NC3Rs, Euprotec is actively involved in the development of ethically acceptable models of infection. Currently under development is an approach where invertebrate models are used to screen antimicrobial drugs and determine virulence attributes of specific microbes. These models have the following benefits:

• Higher throughput and more rapid turn-around than standard pharmacology models.
• Ability to eliminate compounds that are unlikely to be efficacious prior to committing to established models
• Ability of to co-model efficacy and toxicity.
• Multiple routes of administration are possible including parenteral.
• Ability to screen at multiple incubation temperatures.
